Hanmer Weedbusters is an excellent example of a community owned and driven initiative with strong support from a range of local government and community / environmental groups.
While the group is new, only having been in operation since mid-2009, a considerable amount of time was spent in establishing the group’s structure, function, funding and operation. This solid foundation is the key to the Hanmer Weedbuster’s impressive immediate results and in maintaining local pride and momentum to ensure the long-term success of this initiative.
We believe this group deserves recognition for their planning in setting up the group with long-term sustainably. Once established, Weedbusters immediately implemented a range of local projects with instant success and high visibility which serve to further educate both locals and visitors about weed threats and control.
The primary goal of the group is to learn about weeds and be part of maintaining and preserving natural biodiversity of the Hanmer area.
The core Weedbuster Group comprises eight local residents with on-going support from DOC, E-Can and Hurunui District Council. Support from these organisations include technical advice and instruction, promotion and publicity, some funding and of course staff volunteer time as well. Additional volunteers from the community and visitors also participate in programmes as required.
