Christchurch's Wetland Warriors
Mar 19, 2007
Author: Weedbusters

In a quiet corner of Travis Wetland in Burwood, Christchurch, the Clarevale Reserve Weedbusters continue their fortnightly fight against exotic invaders.

This weedbusting effort is in association with a scientific study on the restoration of kahikatea forest in a wetland area.

The weeds tackled are mostly blackberry, gorse, grey willow, convolvulus, broom and introduced grasses.

The dedicated duo behind this effort are Dave Evans and Simon Shikongo. Dave has been involved in weeding in Clarevale Reserve since the project first started in 1999. Simonís involvement with Travis
Wetland, of which Clarevale Reserve is a part, goes back even further to when he was a local school pupil volunteering his time.

The eight years of persistence is paying off, with most weedy areas under control and the work now mainly maintenance - an effort that will help safeguard the future of this important area.
