Ahuriri Estuary Weedbusters

Thursday 3 September 2020 – Thursday 2 September 2021, 8:30am – 12:00pm

The Ahuriri Estuary is a wildlife refuge near the Napier Airport. The Ahuriri Estuary Group has been meeting regularly since 2002 to control weeds (take your pick!), replant with natives and generally keep the estuary beautiful. We meet on the first Thursday of every month (bar January) between 8:30 am and noon at the Humber Street carpark (Pandora Pond). Be gardening fit, and wear gardening clothes and shoes. We will have most gear as needed but if you have a favourite pair of secateurs bring them along. It can get very cold in winter so appropriate cold and wet weather gear in season. Other tools and morning tea are provided.

Occasionally the meeting place can vary so if you would like to join us, or would like more information about us or the estuary contact Alan Lee at Enable JavaScript to view protected content. or on 027 539 6278.

Omahu Bush Weedbusting

Friday 4 – Wednesday 16 September 2020, 8:45am – 2:30pm

Omahu Bush is situated at the southern end of Christchurch’s Port Hills, comprising around 180 hectares of remnant and regenerating native forest, native tussock and the iconic prominent volcanic landmark of Gibraltar Rock. Although not as modified as Ohinetahi Reserve, weeds are still a problem, particularly gorse, broom and some Darwin’s barberry. The Omahu Bush group of the Summit Road Society would welcome assistance to deal with these plant pests on the first and third Friday of each month. Equipment needed is gloves, secateurs, loppers, saw and grubber/spade. We can provide some tools if needed. Bring morning tea and lunch. Car pooling from Christchurch (8.45am leaving from Longhurst Tce) can be arranged, and we finish by 2.30pm.

Working bees are usually held on the first Sunday afternoon and second Tuesday morning of each month. Bring gardening gloves and hand tools if you have them. Wear weather/sun protection and sturdy boots. Refreshments are provided.

Mahoe Reserve Weedbusting

Sunday 6 September 2020 – Sunday 5 September 2021, 2:00pm

The Mahoe Reserve, situated in Boundary Road, Lincoln, opposite the High School is a native regeneration project that was started by Lincoln High School students and members of the local community in an old shingle pit. It is now looked after by the Mahoe Committee, a subcommittee of the Lincoln Envirotown Trust. We are recreating vegetation similar to the scrub, woodland and forest that was prevalent in the Lincoln area up until a few thousand years ago when the Waimakariri river changed its course and came through the Lincoln area. This explains the presence of the shingle beds. The recovering woody vegetation then was destroyed again by fires around 700 years ago and later by the introduction of agriculture and permanent settlement about 150 years ago. The plants used in the restoration are all locally sourced to be genetically as close as possible to the original plants. Planting was started in 2003. Unfortunately the shingle pit was used as an unofficial rubbish dump for many years, including for garden waste. This may explain the problems we have with weeds, including convolvulus, hemlock, gorse, broom and many, many other weeds.

Working bees are held on the first Sunday of the month, starting at 2.00pm. Volunteers need to bring tools, hats, sunscreen, their own refreshments, however there is a water fountain at the Reserve.

Contact Sue Jarvis 03 329 5858 for more information. More information about the reserve can be found on: www.lincolnenvirotown.org.nz

Motutapu Island Extreme Weeding Bee

Sunday 13 September 2020 – Sunday 12 September 2021, 9:15am

The Motutapu Restoration Trust has regular ‘extreme’ weeding bees every second Sunday (the next few being 1st, 15th and 29th October; 12th and 16th November; 10th December. In 2018 we start 18th February and continue fortnightly from then except for long weekends, Easter etc.). Registration is essential.

The target weed is moth plant – which, if left uncontrolled, threatens the native forest on Motutapu Island (the island next to Rangitoto). The work is tough. A high level of fitness is required. Moth plant produces a sap which can irritate the skin. We recommend you wear light loose clothing that covers your arms and legs, a sunhat and sturdy footwear (as much of the work is on slopes). You need to bring your own lunch (there are no shops on the island) and drink lots of water (we recommend using a camelback so that your hands are free). We provide tools. Motutapu is an island, transport is by ferry. The cost of the ferry is $24.50 (with an approved volunteer card which we give to you when you ‘check in’ with us on the morning of departure) and biosecurity guidelines apply when landing on this island.

Ferries depart from Downtown Auckland at 9:15am and from Devonport at 9:30am.

For more information or to register for each volunteer day email Enable JavaScript to view protected content. or contact Vanessa on 021-0279-4591 or 09-580-3123. Registration is essential.
