Motutapu Island Extreme Weeding Bee
The Motutapu Restoration Trust has regular ‘extreme’ weeding bees every second Sunday (the next few being 1st, 15th and 29th October; 12th and 16th November; 10th December. In 2018 we start 18th February and continue fortnightly from then except for long weekends, Easter etc.). Registration is essential.
The target weed is moth plant – which, if left uncontrolled, threatens the native forest on Motutapu Island (the island next to Rangitoto). The work is tough. A high level of fitness is required. Moth plant produces a sap which can irritate the skin. We recommend you wear light loose clothing that covers your arms and legs, a sunhat and sturdy footwear (as much of the work is on slopes). You need to bring your own lunch (there are no shops on the island) and drink lots of water (we recommend using a camelback so that your hands are free). We provide tools. Motutapu is an island, transport is by ferry. The cost of the ferry is $24.50 (with an approved volunteer card which we give to you when you ‘check in’ with us on the morning of departure) and biosecurity guidelines apply when landing on this island.
Ferries depart from Downtown Auckland at 9:15am and from Devonport at 9:30am.
