Profile
The Papakura Stream is a 63 km long stretch of water running from Whitford to the Manukau Harbour. Once covered in indigenous kahikatea and pukatea forest, it has seen extensive habitat loss to farming, urbanisation and heavy industry.
While native plantings have been undertaken in more recent years to begin restoring this important habitat for our taonga species, this regeneration is under serious threat from invasive pest plants, which can smother, displace and strangle natives before they reach maturity. The aim of the Halo Project is to support the successful regeneration of this stream to full health through strategic, community-based weed management, increasing native plant coverage and environmental monitoring.
