After many months of anticipation and prep work, I am excited to announce that the Weed Action Community Weed Control Resources (I think I may need to work on a more catchy name….) is up and running and available to you as a Whangarei Heads community member.

The aim of the community resources is to make it as easy as possible to tackle the weed problems in your backyard or local community, by loaning the tools, equipment, and safety gear, and providing the herbicide for our priority weed species. We also provide all the ‘how to info’ so you know exactly what you need and how to use the equipment and herbicide.

We have hand tools, spray bottles, gel applicator bottles, knapsacks, overalls, safety glasses, nitrile gloves, spray masks, a choice selection of herbicides and more!

So, if for example, you had some wild ginger in the back garden that you have been looking at and thinking ‘I really should deal to that’ for the last few years, it’s as easy as getting in touch, and I can give you the ‘how to’ instructions (cut the tops off just above the pink collar at the base of the stem - actually quite easy and satisfying) and provide you with some gloves and a spray bottle of the right type of herbicide to treat the stumps. Easy as that!

The gear is also available for group weed events if you want to tackle a bigger area with a bunch of like-minded individuals. It has recently been in use to great effect for the Wharf Rd Weed Action group, tackling privet and eleagnus along the coast, and for Northtec students tackling eleagnus, cotoneaster, wild ginger, agapanthus and Taiwan cherry at Whangarei Heads School.

For more info or to arrange a pick up, get in touch on 022 056 2277 or by email at [Enable JavaScript to view protected content]. You can also check out our Facebook page “Weed Action Whangarei Heads”. Don’t be shy, get into it! Lets show those weeds that the Whangarei Heads community means business!
