Adopt A Highway project
Region: Wanganui-Manawatu
Award Category: Wanganui-Manawatu
Year: 2012
The Dannevirke Community Board initiated a project in 2004 to transform an area of State Highway 2 at the northern approach to Dannevirke covered in weeds and vegetation. This was facilitated through the Adopt A Highway scheme managed by Transit New Zealand (now the New Zealand Transport Agency). From the outset this work was undertaken by two dedicated volunteers, being David Mulinder and Dave Pawson. Through their tireless efforts and commitment this area has now been cleared of weeds, and it has been established as an attractive area to greet travellers as they enter Dannevirke at the approach from the north travelling on State Highway 2. All weeds have been cleared from this site and the area is being planted and landscaped. Without the endeavours of these volunteers the road side reserve would have continued to be overgrown and very untidy.
