The Shelly Bay rseidents & ratepayers Association was formed in the year 2000, by a small group of locals, mostly representing the farming community, with an interest in a range of activities, related to the local environment. Ten years on, the organization has a financial membership of 79 persons, and is actively involved with environmental projects, information and promotional activities.
South Kaipara Landcare have been very pro-active in respect to the control and removal of two of the most widespread weeds in the area, that of Hornwort in lake Ototoa and
Woolly Nightshade , which is a prolific pest over the whole of the South Kaipara Peninsula.
More recently, South Kaipara Landcare, facilitated a highly successful Plant Pest Management Workshop, which educated landowners to identify and manage weeds on their respective properties.
