Students at Rangitoto College are removing weeds from an area of bush in the school grounds - 3 hectares’ worth! We are tackling weeds with the help of Auckland Council’s biosecurity department and we get wonderful support. We have usually 10 - 15 dedicated students each year working on the site.
We remove a HUGE amount of weeds each year, but it is a ‘two steps forward, one step back’ type situation. The biggest problem weed species we deal with are: wild ginger, pampas, gorse, Japanese honeysuckle, woolly nightshade, arum lily, tradescantia, oh, and wattle! These species are relentless and we are always having re-weed sites we have cleared just months earlier.
